The Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert at the Wiener Musikverein is one of the most beloved events in classical music, ringing in each new year for over eight decades with a joyful celebration in the Viennese tradition. Tickets to see the Vienna Philharmonic in their trademark repertoire sell out a year in advance, but for the second year running, you can also catch every note on medici.tv. For the 2025 edition, Italian conductor Riccardo Muti returns to lead the storied orchestra for the seventh time in this marquee event, following recent collaborations in the 2021 New Year's Concert and 2018 New Year's Concert. They perform a selection of festive works, including waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family — with a particular emphasis on Johann Strauss II to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth in 2025. Pieces making their New Year's Concert debut this year include a march from Hellmesberger's operetta Das Veilchenmädel (The Violet Girl), as well as a waltz by female composer Constanze Geiger.
